Location

Located at the foot of the beautiful Black Hills, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology students have access to year-round outdoor recreational activities.

The School of Mines is in Rapid City, South Dakota's second-largest city. The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial,  Badlands National Park, Devil's Tower National Monument, and other attractions.

There are caves, mountains, streams, and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life.

The Badlands represent some of the world's greatest fossil resources as well as serving as an outdoor laboratory for the School of Mines.
