School of Mines Offers Wetland Ecology Graduate Research Opportunity

Article Body

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology announces the availability of a new graduate assistantship for a doctoral candidate interested in biogeochemistry and global environmental change research. The successful candidate will primarily work on biogeochemistry of coastal wetlands as part of recently funded National Science Foundation project. There will also be opportunities to participate in other federally-funded projects to develop indexes for evaluating the functional restoration of wetlands, and local and regional water quality. In addition to access to the state-of-the-art Biogeochemistry Core Facility, the student will have an opportunity to gain international experience in establishing an environmental observation network by participating in a multi-million dollar initiative in India.

Interested students are encouraged to contact Dr. P.V. Sundareshwar, assistant professor, atmospheric sciences, as soon as possible to discuss this opportunity. Admission into the atmospheric and environmental sciences Ph.D. degree program at the School of Mines is required. A stipend of approximately $25,000 and a substantial reduction in tuition is being offered for one incoming entry-level doctoral student for the year, beginning fall 2008.

Further information on Dr. Sundareshwar's research and the IAS can be found on the web site www.ias.sdsmt.edu and School of Mines graduate education program information is available at http://graded.sdsmt.edu.
