FIRST Adventures

FIRST Adventure Weekends take place the weekend before classes begin.  Participants move in a day before other residence hall students and then head out the following morning (while everyone else is just starting to move in) on various Adventures. 

Even better - many faculty, staff, alumni and current students are able to join the Adventures.  Past participants include Dr. Kellogg, Dr. Stetler, Dr. Kenner, Wes Roth, Barb Felderman, Lori Coble, Dean Mahon, Lenn Naughton, Dr. Simonson, Dr. Dolan and the CAMP Formula and Baja teams, Shashi Kanth, Drs. Kate & Lee Alley, Dr. Whitehead, Jolie McCoy, Cheryl Holt, Dean Hrncir, Tim Vottero, Rick Demarest, Suzi Aadland, Heather Fannin, Julie Smoragiewicz, as well as ROTC, Leadership Development Team, IVCF, Circle K and others!

Cost for the Adventure Weekends is $35 per student - this covers any meals, lodging and a few extras.

Adventures for 2008 (General Schedule)

BadlandsExperience the Badlands of South Dakota! Join the President of the Paleontology Club in this Badlands Adventure. You will be able to hike in the Badlands National Park and learn how much of the area was formed. Hopefully you will see some buffalo as well! Then make a stop at Wall Drug before heading back to campus. There will be a cook out that night and ice cream the next day. Please join us and get to know South Dakota! CAMP—Walk through the events of vehicle design within CAMP, Center of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing and Production, including use of the Labs and exposure to the values and philosophies of the organization. The Formula and Baja teams will be leading this adventure. (Contact person: Jason Fields)

Camping—Explore the beauty of the Black Hills with camping fun. Base camp is at Sylvan Lake and there will be a hike to Harney Peak. Enjoy a personal interaction with faculty and meet new people. Learn the area surrounding School of Mines before classes start. (Contact Person: Stuart Kellogg)

Golf Adventure—Get to know the upstanding members of the Delta Sig fraternity before starting school. The men of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity at the School of Mines are hosting a golfing adventure for all those willing to learn about Delta Sig and meet new people. Delta Sig will also host an open house/cook out on the Monday before classes start. You do not need any experience with golf to join the adventure, but you can bring your own golf clubs if desired. Join Delta Sig and help them have a great start to the new school year. (Contact person: Tom Clay)

Mining: Head up to Gillette, WY to see what half a million pounds of explosives going off looks and feels like!  See trucks the size of a house, and the fascinating world of high-tech engineering in action.  Finish off the evening with an awe inspiring & exclusive up-close look at the Crazy Horse memorial. Spirit/Pride—You will truly make a difference at the School of Mines. Learn more about the school traditions and involvement with school activities as well as Rapid city and the surrounding areas spirit and pride. Complete various service projects and be the cheer section at a Hardrocker sporting event. Football, volleyball, and cross country team members- this is set up to work around your schedules. You will also have an opportunity to meet School of Mines administrators, faculty, staff, and alumni. (Contact Person: Pat Mahon)
