Placement Testing

The ACT is the required initial test used to place students who attend a South Dakota regental university into their English and mathematics courses. A student can be placed in classes via the ACT sub-scores for math & English, or via the ACT COMPASS exam, which is administered at South Dakota universities including the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

The COMPASS exam is self-paced, administered on a computer, and takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes for each section (math, writing and reading). To find out if you need to take the COMPASS exam or sign-up, see the New Student Checklist.
