School of Mines Leads South Dakota in Math Modeling Contest

A team of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology students received an honorable mention in the 22nd Mathematical Contest in Modeling, leading the state for the fourth consecutive year.

In the contest, teams of three undergraduate students are given open-ended complex problems. The teams need to research the topic, develop a mathematical model, use a computer to simulate the model and write a technical report. The teams complete the task in one weekend.

The School of Mines team worked on a problem a sprinkler irrigation problem where the students needed to devise a procedure that would involve the setup and management of a portable aluminum sprinkler system that is commonly used to irrigate fields.

Last year, 600 teams from more than 300 colleges and universities from around the world competed in the competition. This is the sixth consecutive year that the School of Mines has competed.
