School of Mines Finishes First at ASCE Conference

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) finished first out of 13 schools at the 2006 ASCE Rocky Mountain Regional Conference. In addition to the overall first-place finish, there were several outstanding individual performances.

The concrete canoe team placed first overall and travelled to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for the national ASCE competition. The concrete canoe competition requires students to design and construct a canoe out of concrete that will be judged on appearance, weight and presentation, and performance in sprint and endurance races.

The School of Mines steel bridge team received first place in aesthetics. The competition requires students to design, fabricate and construct a steel bridge to be scored on assembly time, efficiency, total weight, and aesthetics.

In addition, Shaun Fontenelle (CE, Rapid City) placed second in the non-technical paper and presentation competition, and the pre-design team finished third overall.
